I love gravy. I workout with one goal in mind - so I can eat more gravy. (OKAY NOT REALLY! HAHHA! I love to feel good and be strong.. but more gravy.. yes!) This creamy vegan gravy is crazy delicious and sort of addictive, really. I eat it on EVERYTHING! On Plant Strong Biscuits, mashed potatoes, hash browns, french fries, toast and even over asparagus. It's that good! It's also super easy and convenient for an easy breakfast, for adding to potatoes at dinner or whenever really!
I make this with rice flour instead of wheat flour because rice flour is SO easy to work with! You don't have to worry about it lumping up when cooking and it doesn't get a thick skin on top when it's sat at the table for a while. I love to use it to thicken up all sorts of sauces or other dishes. Try to find brown rice flour but if you can't find it white rice four will work just fine.
Oh and another thing - this is enough to make 4 batches of gravy. You just mix all of the dry ingredients together and keep them in a jar. When ya want some gravy just measure out some dry, add some plant strong vegan milk and you'll have gravy in just a couple of minutes! I love mixes (but store bought usually have lots of yucky junk in them so we gotta make our own sometimes!)
Easy Creamy Peppered Country Gravy Mix
makes enough for 4 batches of gravy (each batch is about 2 cups of gravy) - feel free to double or triple this recipe so you have tons of gravy mix on hand! (Oh and if you want to make just one batch divide everything in this section by 4.)
- 1 cup brown rice flour (or white rice flour if you can't find brown rice)
- 1/4 cup nutritional yeast flakes
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 Tablespoon + 1 teaspoon rubbed sage
- 1 Tablespoon finely ground black pepper (this can be quite peppery to some so if you are sensitive cut it back to two teaspoons and add more if necessary when cooking.)
Blend everything together in a blender or food processor to make sure that it is evenly combined and that the nutritional yeast flakes are powdered. Store in a jar in your pantry for 6 months or more!
Alright, now when you're ready to make your gravy from the mix follow the directions below!
To make a batch of gravy -
- 1/4 cup gravy mix
- 2 cups unsweetened soy, almond or your favorite non-dairy milk (it must be unsweetened!)
Whisk your gravy mix and soy milk in a small pot over medium-high heat. Cook until thickened. Make sure you are stirring it while cooking, it should only take a couple of minutes to thicken up. The nice thing about rice flour is that it doesn't clump up though so you can be a little more careless with the whisking!
