It has come to my attention (once again) that I live in Oregon. I haven’t left for a while. It’s just that the summer is gone. Fall is here for certain. It’s back to being wet and cold outside. And dark. My favorite thing to do when it’s cold outside is eat. Haha! But eat warm yummy foods that I cook in the slow cooker so it keeps my kitchen warm and makes the whole house smell wonderful.
This is so easy that it’s incredible that we buy applesauce. I guess I could make a whole ton of it and can some for the summer months. We’ll see about that… I just canned a ton of summer foods so I’m slightly burnt out right now.
And just so you know, you don’t have to use plums. You could use any kind of stone fruit like peaches or even cherries! Or you could just leave them out all together and add more apples. It’s a very flexible recipe.
It is soooo super yummy warm right out of the crockpot. Of course it was way too hot for my daughter so she insisted I stick some in the freezer. I did. And then forgot about it. And then I told her it was ice cream. SHE LOVED IT! I tasted it and it was pretty delicious, honestly! So if you need a cold sweet treat you could try that too!
- 4 cups chopped plums (don’t peel! Just remove the pits.)
- 6 cups chopped apples (again, don’t peel! Just remove the seeds!)
- 1/4 cup water
- 1.5 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- juice of 1/2 lemon
Throw everything into the crockpot and cook for 4-6 hours on low. Then you can mash it up with a fork or even use your immersion blender (or blend in batches) to get smooth sauce. Add sugar to taste at the end. I found that we needed none because both of the fruits were very sweet. Serve warm, cool or frozen even!
